A first-timer's guide to Stone Town

Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage maze where African, Arab, Indian and European influences have layered over a thousand years of trade. The best way to see it is to get deliberately lost.
Start with the doors. The carved wooden doors are the town's signature — brass studs, intricate frames, each one telling you something about the family that lived behind it.
By late afternoon, head to the Forodhani Gardens night market for grilled seafood, Zanzibari pizza and sugarcane juice pressed in front of you. It's where the whole town comes to eat.
Go with a local guide for the history, then go back alone to wander. Stone Town rewards the curious.
